At the heart of a piezo stack actuator(https://is.gd/PIPFRH) lies a stack of piezoelectric ceramic layers. These ceramic layers are bonded together, with each layer carefully poled to alternate between positive and negative electrical polarization. When a voltage is applied across the stack, the layers expand or contract in a predictable and proportional manner. This controlled deformation leads to linear motion, with sub-micrometer precision achievable in some cases.
